Vermont – The place you call home.

The place where people like you and your family came to start a new life of Freedom and prosperity. The earliest settlers came from France and later from Great Britain. Some had land grants from New York and New Hampshire with the nearby colonies disputing control of the area. The Green Mountain Boys, led by Colonel Seth Warner, supported the claims of those from Hew Hampshire and ultimately formed the Vermont Republic. Founded in 1777, during the Revolutionary War, the Republic lasted for about 14 years. Vermont was the first state to join the U.S.A. as its 14th state and was the first to partially abolish slavery. The name “Vermont” means the Green Mountains, from the French, which run the entire length of the state.

The Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777. A combined American force attacked the Hessians at Hoosick, NY across from Bennington. They killed or captured the entire detachment. The Battles of Bennington and Saratoga are recognized as a turning point in the Revolutionary War because they were the first defeat of a British Army. The anniversary is still celebrated today. Vermont was admitted to the Union as the 14th state on March 4, 1791.

Many immigrants, like you and your Family, came to Vermont during the mid-19th century, including Irish, Scots, and Italians. Many migrated to Barre where they worked as stonecutters cutting granite and, later, marble. There were many who started farms and developed the favorite of many American breakfasts, Maple Syrup, becoming the largest producer in the U.S. The history of Vermont is your history too.
