Pennsylvania – The place you call home.
The place where people like you and your family came to find Freedom and Prosperity. In 1681, Pennsylvania started as a land grant to William Penn’s son. It was one of the 13 original founding states of the United States. It was the second state to ratify the United States Constitution on December 12, 1787.
Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted, is located in Philadelphia. Valley Forge was General Washington’s headquarters during the winter of 1777-1778.
First settled by the Dutch, the Swedish and then the English. In 1664, the Duke of York sold a portion of his land grant that included present day New Jersey. The sale boxed in the portion of New Netherland on the West side of the Delaware River. In 1664 New Amsterdam was forced to surrender while facing British ship cannons in New York Harbor.
When the Founding Fathers convened in Philadelphia in 1774, the other 12 colonies sent representatives. They drew up and signed the Declaration of Independence. The Articles of Confederation formed the new nation. Later, the Constitution was written and signed at Independence Hall too.
