Maine – The place you call home.

The name “Maine” in Welsh means rock or stone and the origin is widely debated. When the Europeans arrived, there were many Native American people here. There is evidence that the Norwegians, coming from Iceland and Greenland had discovered America and were unsuccessful in establishing a permanent settlement around 1000 BC trading in timber. A 10th-century Norwegian coin was found at a Native American dig site in 1954. The first settlement was by the French in 1604. The first European settlement was short-lived, the Popham Colony which was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. The rugged climate and conflicts with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years. By the 18th century, only six settlements had survived. Many of the Native American tribes went to Canada.

During the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the area was occupied by the British. It was returned to the United states as part of a Peace Treaty. Maine was actually a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until March 15, 1820 when it was admitted as the 23rd state. The capital of Maine, Augusta, was moved from Portland in 1832, because of its central location. In 1837, a dam was built over the Kennebec River. With the arrival of the railroad in 1851, Augusta became an even more productive mill town producing lumber, sash doors, shutters, broom handles, stone cutters tools, shoes, headstones, ice and furniture.
