Finney County, Kansas – 1883 – 2017

Finney County, Kansas - The Place you call home. The place where people like you and your Family came to start a new life filled with Freedom and Prosperity. Finney County began around 1880 as Buffalo County and Sequoyah County, named after Sequoyah, the Cherokee Indian responsible for the development of the Cherokee alphabet. The two counties were renamed Finney County in honor of the Lieutenant Governor David Wesley Finney.

Charles “Buffalo” Jones was a co-founder and first mayor of Garden City, arriving in 1879, for an Antelope hunt. As mayor, he met people like Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill Cody and was a friend to President Theodore Roosevelt. He was known for his efforts to preserve the buffalo from extinction. Before returning home, the Fulton Brothers procured his services to promote Garden City, especially to the railroad. The railroad agreed to put a station at Garden City and later that year more people came to homestead the area. There was a long drought. Irrigation arrived in Finney County in 1879 with the completion of the Garden City Ditch. That ditch helped launch an agricultural boom in southwestern Kansas. Jones was also a friend to Buffalo Bill Cody who stayed in the Presidential suite of the Windsor Hotel which was known as the “Waldorf of the Prairies.”

The streets of Garden City were crowded with horses, wagons, buggies and teams of oxen and there was always a crowd in line waiting to get mail at the Post Office. The town was booming.  It grew to become an agricultural center. It is home to the Lee Richardson Zoo, the largest zoological facility in western Kansas, with over 300 animals. Nearby is the Buffalo Game Preserve with one of the largest herds of bison in the world.
