Athens, Alabama: 1818 – 2018 Celebrating 200 years

Athens, AL - the place you call home. Founded in 1818, Athens is one of the oldest cities in the State of Alabama and is known as the Heart of Dixie due to its central location. In 1806, when settlers and pioneers first started moving into the area now known as Limestone County, they went even further west past the Congressional Reservation Line and into the lands claimed by the Chickasaw Tribes. This lead to clashes, known as the Chickasaw Raids, between the settlers, Native Americans and the soldiers. The settlers were known as the Intruders and they were made to suffer at the hands of the soldiers and the Chickasaw. They built cabins and planted crops. The Chickasaw were fierce fighters and staged raids on their unwelcomed guests. They had the support of the U.S. Government, whose soldiers burned the cabins and crops to force them to leave the land. After 1816, the settlers were allowed to stay and the Chickasaw Nation ceded all claims to the land. The settlers flocked to Huntsville to buy the land they had settled. They came by wagon roads and rivers until the 1850’s. This changed when the Tennessee and Central Alabama Railroad was built.

During the War Between the States, the rail system was the focus of much of the fighting. In May, 1862, Union Colonel John B. Turchin and his soldiers sacked Athens and occupied the city, looting, and destroying property. The Union Army established a fort at the Sulphur Creek Trestle. In 1864, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest captured the fort, the trestle, 2 blockhouses, the Union garrison, their weapons and horses in a battle that lasted 8 hours. The war brought hardship to everyone for many years.

After the war, the farmers had a tough time getting the supplies and things they needed. All the money was loaned by the government at high interest rates, making it very hard to re-establish themselves and gain security for their families. Today, Limestone County is one of the largest producers of cotton in the state.
